The Silence by John R Leonetti
Review by Danielle DC, Youth Reviewer
I don't usually watch horror films, so "The Silence" was one of my first. In all honesty, it was...all right. "The Silence" came out in 2019 and can be watched on Netflix. It was also filmed right here in Canada and before the film’s release, the cast was in high appraisal with Kiernan Shipka, Stanley Tucci, Miranda Otto and John Corbett. However, when I watched it, there wasn't anything too special that stood out to me or made me want to watch the movie again.
To start, there are some fresh and captivating scenes in this film. For example, I did like how they included the origin story of the monsters (aka “Vesps”), and I enjoyed the use of sound/music throughout the movie. There were also the amazing special effects and CGI (of the Vesps) which brought the film to life.
Still, there were many plot holes and, in my opinion, the acting wasn't outstanding either. It felt almost forced in some scenes which took away from the suspense of the situation at hand. However, there are still some applaudable scenes because of the cast’s acting and their ability to portray their characters. But all in all, the acting was adequate with some pros and an equal amount of cons. There were also so many concepts that were quickly introduced and then dropped with little to no development; this happened with the main characters as well.
So, overall it was an “okay” movie. I wouldn't recommend it, but it is a nice movie to watch if you are bored, especially since it's not as scary as some horror films.
