Shades of Women by Kitchener-Waterloo Society of Artists

March 8 to April 26, 2023

Enjoy this thought-provoking and heart-touching show by Kitchener-Waterloo's oldest art society, Kitchener-Waterloo Society of Artists (KWSA), beginning March 8, International Women's Day.

In this exhibit you will see varied shades of women - different cultural backgrounds, their roles as mother, daughter, sister, wife, friend; their emotions, leadership, and empowered aspects; abused and exploited experiences; women from the past, present, and future.

KWSA's experienced and emerging artists use various mediums like alcohol ink, watercolors, acrylics, oil paints, photography, encaustics, resin art, and more, to capture essential pillars of our society – women.

KWSA History

With a present membership of 79 members, the Kitchener Waterloo Society of Artists is Waterloo Region's oldest continuously operating arts organization.

Mentoring artists on all levels, the group meets regularly from September to June, hosting special presenters, art shows, and competitions. The group was formed in June 1931 by Ralph Connor (1895-1951), who placed an advertisement placed in the Kitchener Record.

By 1941, the group was exhibiting regularly at the former Kitchener Public Library on Queen Street. When the new Kitchener Public Library opened in 1962, the Society was allowed to use the facility for exhibits and art rentals. Many of its members competed for the honour of painting the commissioned large mural. The honour went to KWSA member, Jack Bechtel (1923-1966).

The large group now meets regularly at the Kitchener Downtown Community Centre on Weber Street in Kitchener.
