KITCHENER, ON — Kitchener Public Library (KPL) is excited to announce the launch of the Commons Studio, a broad and accessible collection of filmmaking and photography equipment, housed at Central Library. Making the art of filmmaking more accessible to all, the collection includes equipment suitable for beginners, professionals, hobbyists, artists, and everyone in-between.

This one-of-a-kind collection reduces barriers to filmmaking and empowers creators to develop high-quality films and creative projects. Filmmaking equipment and editing suites have also been integrated into Heffner Studio at KPL, as part of an emergent suite of studio-focused programs and projects for all ages.

“Platforming the Commons Studio project at Kitchener Public Library is an exciting opportunity. We are keen to build on a history of enterprising not-for-profits making specialized equipment available in the community in progressive partnership,” said Nathan Stretch, Community Development Division Manager. “Sustainable access to technology is at the heart of the Commons Studio project and we’re excited to see what the community will create.”

Notable equipment includes: continuous lighting kits, cinema quality glass, professional Sigma and Canon prime and zoom lenses, 4K and 6K film and photography cameras, and a full suite of grip and electrical gear. Equipment pick-up and returns are made from Heffner Studio at KPL’s Central Library at 85 Queen Street North, Kitchener. Items may be booked using a user-friendly online portal. Community members, organizations and companies may request items for rent with their library card.

The Commons Studio is offered in partnership with The Working Centre and Lighthouse Equipment Inc. This unique partnership is a social enterprise project that encourages filmmaking through the sharing of skills, knowledge, equipment and resources.
