The Subtweet examines the intersections of the music industry, race, and social media through the transformative friendship between two musicians.
Vivek Shraya described her identity in a 2016 interview as “Artist / South Asian / Trans / Femme / Bisexual”. Her art is multidisciplinary, ranging from music to photography to writing, and her second novel draws in these multifaceted experiences in her exploration of two musicians who grapple with the tensions of internet culture and being artists in the 21st century.
As we delve into the lives of Neela and RUK-MINI, the book explores systemic pressures and the impact they have on the lives of these two women, and ultimately, on their friendship. The book is described as “a stirring examination of making art in the modern era, a love letter to brown women, an authentic glimpse into the music industry, and a nuanced exploration of the promise and peril of being seen.”
