Community libraries are a vital part our library system. They support and connect neighbourhoods with library services across Kitchener.
Located in the south end of Kitchener, Pioneer Park Library got its start as a bookmobile. The bookmobile was on a fixed site and operated three days a week before moving into a storefront. The library moved to its current home, in a shared complex with Doon Pioneer Park Community Centre, in 1989 and it has been a neighbourhood destination ever since.
Kevyn, a library assistant at Pioneer Park Library, is a connector. Whether they are helping customers find their next great read, providing technology support or building relationships with customers, Kevyn is making important connections with their community.
Kevyn started as a volunteer and then worked as a shelver at Kitchener Public Library’s Country Hills location while they completed their Library and Information Technician diploma. Initially working as an early childhood educator, Kevyn was drawn to a career in public libraries because of their passion for literacy and skill development and the important role libraries play in the community.
“Public libraries are a place where everyone is welcomed to be who they are and receive the information they need,” said Kevyn.
Being co-located with the Doon Pioneer Park Community Centre means Pioneer Park Library is well integrated into the community.
“We serve a diverse community, across all age groups. Being connected to the community centre is awesome because program participants can access to two different services in the same spot.”
Hearing from customers about a book they have just finished or a movie they have watched is the most rewarding. These connections with customers and being able to support their needs is an important part of Kevyn's role. Because of staff like Kevyn, no matter which location you visit, Kitchener Public Library offers engaging spaces where people connect, ideas flourish and lives are transformed.
