Be the Change

On behalf of Kitchener Public Library, I am thrilled to join staff in celebrating National Volunteer Week this April! As we recognize the collective efforts of volunteers, we reflect on the multitude of actions taken locally to help our communities, neighbourhoods and individuals become better prepared to respond to the unexpected, and better positioned for a more sustainable future.

We see it every day! Volunteers helping young students to read, lifting their self-esteem and increasing their success in school. Volunteers visiting people, lifting their spirits and keeping them connected to the library. Volunteers tutoring adults on how use technology, helping others improve their digital literacy skills and promoting life-long learning.

Volunteering can also give volunteers a lift. When we have the opportunity to work with others, our spirits are lifted. Our sense of purpose is lifted when we see how our efforts have helped someone else. Our confidence is lifted when we gain skills and experience through volunteering, helping us get into a competitive school program or successfully find a job.

From all of us at Kitchener Public Library, we thank you, and wish you a happy National Volunteer Week!
