"Tout le Monde" by Elise Gravel
Review by Chanelle Seguin, Senior Library Assistant and Children's Programmer, Central Library
Everyone is unique in their own way, but there are also things that make us similar and help us not feel alone. We all have fears and moments of joy. Also, we all go to the toilet.
Elise Gravel has created a fun-loving children’s book that so many of us, old and young, can understand. The book emphasizes the message that everyone has something in common and is deserving of respect. The simple text accompanied by striking, colourful illustrations make this book timeless. Gravel has become popular for her playful illustrations which resonate well with children. In addition, Gravel's subtle touches of humour have made her books clever and likeable. For example, on the page that reads “Tout le monde va aux toilettes,” a character is sitting on a toilet while reading “Pas Moi,” which is another book by Gravel. Next to that character, there is a cat in its litterbox.
Gravel, from Montreal, Quebec, began writing books in French. "Tout le Monde" is an excellent choice for those eager to transition from elementary vocabulary books to French stories. It reinforces important French vocabulary through repetition, captivating illustrations and examples of authentic French.
