The Children’s department at Kitchener Public Library’s Central Library has been described as one of the most magical places in the world. We recently sat down with Hannah, a senior library assistant with Children’s and Teen Services to find out more.
Kitchener Public Library is a welcoming, engaging space where people connect, ideas flourish and lives are transformed. The Children’s department is a space where curiosity is nurtured and imagination is celebrated. You are surrounded with laughter, joy and conversations between children, families and library staff.
As a senior library assistant Hannah delivers storytime and activity programs for children and families. She works with a wide age range of children from newborns up to nine years. You can also find her at the Children’s desk helping kids find their next favourite book or writing letters as part of our Library Pen Pal program. In the summer you might even spot her at a local park with the Book Pedaler, Kitchener Public Library’s library on wheels.
Hannah first started working at the library as a shelver while she was a high school student. What started as “a sweet after school job” for a kid who loved to read, transformed into a career.
“My career has just been a series of fortunate events, good timing and really supportive colleagues at every location I’ve worked,” said Hannah. “I wouldn’t change it for anything.”
Hannah found the right fit in Children’s and Teen Services. Delivering programs is rewarding work. It means that she is spending time each week with families and has a front row seat to see children’s growth and development as they reach new milestones. “It is remarkable to know that I play even a small role in a child’s development.”
Kitchener Public Library plays such an important role in supporting our community and it is rewarding seeing that happen in real time. That is the magic in the air at Kitchener Public Library and why the Children’s department might be one of the most magical places in the world.
Hannah summed it up perfectly when asked to describe her role in five words: Having fun all the time.
