"Drame" by Raina Telgemeier
Review by Chanelle Seguin, Senior Library Assistant at Southwest Library
Graphic novels are a great choice for those learning a new language. These books do well to blend high interest with less complex vocabulary and grammar structures. One of the best examples of this is “Drame” by Raina Telgemeier.
This graphic novel is the French version of Telgemeier’s popular book, “Drama.” The story follows middle schooler, Callie, who enthusiastically joins the stage crew and becomes passionate about the stage design and its decor. Having the protagonist be part of the stage crew is appreciated as it proves that one does not need to be the star of the show to be considered an important part of the story.
The book is brilliantly structured like a play which allows for the novel’s principal theme to take center stage. Telgemeier captures the challenges of being a tween with authenticity, balancing humour and realism, and makes the story engaging without exaggerating the drama.
The only thing this story lacks is, quite frankly, more story. Callie’s story does not continue in a sequel or spin-off book. With its clever structure and relatable characters, “Drame” is an excellent book for those wanting to improve their French fluency.
