Wish by Chris Buck
Review by Penelope B., Youth Reviewer
Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn directed the Disney musical fantasy film “Wish”. The animated movie features the voice talents of Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine. “Wish” was also created in honour of Disney’s centennial, which allowed many different elements and Easter eggs from other classic Disney movies like “Snow White” and the “Seven Dwarfs”, “Sleeping Beauty”, and many more to be used in the film.
On the island of Rosas, King Magnifico (Chris Pine) is a talented sorcerer who can protect and grant the wishes of his citizens. The kingdom has lived in harmony and peace for many years, knowing that their wishes, which are hard to attain, are being protected and may one day be granted. However, Asha (Ariana DeBose), a young wanna-be apprentice to the king, learns more about the wishes never to be granted and the dark truth behind Magnifico. Taking it upon herself to change things, Asha wishes on a star. From there, a living star comes to her aid; knowing they will need more help, Asha rallies her friends to assist her in stopping the dark magic of King Magnifico.
My favourite thing about “Wish” was the numerous denoted hints seen throughout the film about other Disney movies. Not only that but I also found it interesting that all of Asha’s friends were inspired by the seven dwarfs from Snow White.
“Wish” is a very interesting movie in many ways, one of which was that it celebrates the centennial so the creators made the animation have a watercolour 2D background like the older films but with a modern touch. Overall, “Wish” was a fantastic movie, and I can’t wait to watch it again.
