In October, Kitchener Public Library celebrates the rich culture, traditions and contributions of Canadians with Muslim heritage. Islamic History Month was first recognized by Canada in 2007, but Muslims have had a significant impact on Canadian culture for much longer. The first recorded presence of Muslim communities in Canada dates back to the mid-1800s, but there are gaps in their documented heritage. Organizations such as the Muslims in Canada Archives are working to fill that gap. You can explore "A History of Muslims in Canada" on the Islamic History Month Canada website.
The theme for 2024's Islamic History Month celebration is "Health and Healing." The theme recognizes people such as Ibn Sina (Avicenna,) who wrote one of the most influential medical texts ever written, "The Canon of Medicine." Throughout history, many Muslim scholars, physicians and scientists have shaped our modern approach to health and healing.
