Wake by Amanda Hocking
Review by Penelope B., Youth Reviewer
In a small town by the sea there lives a girl named Gemma, who catches the eyes of three strange girls who turn her life upside down. Amanda Hocking wrote “Wake”, an engaging fictional story, the first book from a collection of many called “A Watersong”. The sisters—Gemma and Harper—are its two main characters.
Gemma shows love and bravery throughout the story. Love plays a vital role in the story because it is the crucial key she needs for her determination. Gemma shows courage when it is essential that she defends herself and her loved ones. These virtues help to keep Gemma on track to achieving her goals.
“Wake” was very fun to read and had exciting moments. My favourite part of the book is when Gemma finally knows what she is, but has to make a big decision about her future and whether she will ever live to see it. I had a hard time putting the book down at this point.
Personally, I wouldn't say I liked the ending of “Wake”; I felt very disappointed after reading it. The book did not have a denouement at the end, leaving the reader wondering what had just happened. I thought the writing was pretty good until halfway through the book, when the author started using foul language. I found it rather unnecessary. Though I was unsatisfied with “Wake’s” ending, the rest of the book was very entertaining. It may be popular among girls in high school who enjoy adventures and romantic dramas.
