Just Like Grandma by Kim Rogers and illustrated by Julie Flett
Review by Kira Burt, Children's Services Librarian, Central Library
Becca knows exactly what she wants, to be just like Grandma! Becca watches Grandma bead beautiful moccasins, paint the world and dance all the way to the grand prize. Grandma is always happy to include Becca and teach her to do all the things Grandma can do. Does Becca realize Grandma is watching and admiring her too.
Kim Rogers has written an uplifting story of how generations influence and learn from each other. Rogers, a member of Wichita and Affiliated Tribes, roots the story in the relationship between granddaughter and grandparents in an Indigenous family. Rogers captures the importance of preserving traditions while allowing room for new passions and skills.
This picture book is beautifully illustrated by Julie Flett who showcases her uniquely textured, collage style art to the story, bringing the characters and setting to life and creating a sense of movement across each page.
The story and illustrations are engaging, clear and accessible for all children. The message is important for younger and older readers alike! This is a great book for all, but especially for grandparents and grandkids looking for a book to read together.
