The Escape Room by Megan Goldin
Review by Fatoumata C., Youth Reviewer
Vincent, Jules, Sylvie, and Sam are competitive and ambitious bankers on Wall Street who will do anything to get to the top since money is the only thing that matters in their world. The four of them meet up to complete a team-building activity in an elevator called “The Escape Room”. They have to try to get out of a locked elevator. Suddenly, it isn't a team-building activity anymore, and they are fighting for their lives while having their secrets revealed.
I enjoyed this novel because it’s really addictive and suspenseful. I've seen this concept in many movies and books but this one is different from all of the others. We have four complex characters with dark backstories. Everything about this book is amazing up until the ending. The ending was a bit weak and predictable. It felt really rushed, and I was so confused by the end. The pace of the book is a bit too fast. I liked it and there are many plot twists, but I think that they should have slowed down the pace a bit.
This novel kept me on the edge of my seat, and I was hooked from the first page and couldn’t stop reading. Every chapter ends with a cliffhanger, making me wonder what would happen next. The book focuses more on the backstories of the 4 bankers as well as another character called Sara Hall. I wish we had longer paragraphs about the four in the escape room since that is what the entire book is about. I like the alternating points of view between Sara Hall and the others. This book contains consistent themes about the struggles in life, revenge, how money can cause problems and ruin your life. I really liked this book and I would recommend it to ages 12+.
