One To Watch by Kate Stayman-London
Review by Joanna S., Youth Reviewer
When I happened upon “One to Watch” by Kate Stayman-London, I immediately knew I had to read it. “One to Watch” is practically a reality show in book form, two things I love. The novel follows Bea Schumacher, a plus-size fashion blogger and the latest bachelorette on the hit reality TV show Main Squeeze.
I really enjoyed this book. If anyone knows me, they know I love my reality TV, especially when it centres around the concept of finding love. This sub-genre of reality TV often provides endless entertainment and binge-worthy episodes. For this reason, I found it fun to be pulled into this bachelorette-Esque experience alongside our protagonist, Bea. I thought it was a wonderful concept. I appreciated the author's focus on making the story realistic and progressive, as Bea appeared as the first plus-size woman to be the protagonist on Main Squeeze. It made me think about how closed-off reality TV show casting is when it comes to diversifying their personalities. As well, I appreciated the journey that we took with Bea. She was not only on a path to find love, but self-love too (despite society's push for plus-size women to change themselves, then love themselves). I thought it was a powerful balance, a reminder that the two go hand in hand. However, I have to say I wasn’t thrilled with the way the romance panned out. Of course, with something so similar to a real reality TV show, readers are sure to have favourites or desired outcomes. Nevertheless, I thought this was such a fun read.
