Do you need to use a computer? We can help!

Use your library card to reserve a desktop PC, Chromebook or iPad at any Kitchener Public Library location.

Please read the Computer and Internet Access policy before using library computers.

Reserve a computer

You can reserve a Windows desktop computer for two hours per day at Central Library, or one hour per day at our Community Library locations.

Note: Computers will automatically shut down 15 minutes before the library closes.

You can reserve online or by calling your preferred library location.

Chromebooks

Chromebooks are fast, secure computers that use Android apps rather than traditional software. They are ideal for internet browsing and working with cloud-based applications.

Use a Chromebook in the library

We have a number of Chromebooks available for in-library use. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be placed on hold.

  • In-library Chromebooks are available at all KPL locations, and can be requested at the information desk.
  • You can use an in-library Chromebook for up to four hours a day.
  • You must have a library card in good standing to use a Chromebook. Unconfirmed address cards and digital library cards are not eligible. Adults 18 years and older must show ID with their library card to use a Chromebook.
  • You will be charged a replacement fee for lost or damaged devices.

New! Borrow a Chromebook

All KPL locations have Chromebooks that can be borrowed for up to one week. Each Chromebook comes with a mouse, power adaptor, information sheet and carrying case.

  • You must have a library card in good standing to borrow a Chromebook. Unconfirmed address, visitor, child, digital, and computer use only cards are not eligible. Adults 18 years and older must show ID with their library card to use a Chromebook.
  • You can place a hold to reserve a Chromebook. We will contact you when your Chromebook is ready to be picked up. You will have two days to pick up your device.
  • You can borrow a Chromebook for one week. You will receive a courtesy notice one day before the due date.
  • You may borrow one Chromebook per library card at a time. Due to high demand, Chromebook loans cannot be renewed.
  • Chromebooks can be returned to any KPL location. Please return your Chromebook directly to library staff during open hours. Do not place Chromebooks in the external or internal book drops.
  • You will be charged a replacement fee for lost or damaged devices.

The Borrow a Chromebook collection is supported by the Government of Canada's Healthy Communities Initiative, and was developed in partnership with the City of Kitchener.

iPads

iPads are portable touchscreen tablets that use Apple apps instead of traditional software. They are ideal for browsing the internet and streaming audio and video.

Using an iPad in the library

  • iPads are available at all library locations. iPads at Central Library are available for children’s use only.
  • You can request an iPad at the information desk.
  • You must have a library card to borrow an iPad. Digital cards are not eligible.
  • iPads can be used in the library for up to four hours. They are available on a first come, first served basis and cannot be placed on hold. You cannot renew an iPad checkout.
  • A replacement fee will apply to lost or damaged devices.

Printing from library computers

You can print in black-and-white or colour at all library locations.

  • Black-and-white: $0.15 per page
  • Colour: $0.50 per page

Wireless printing is available at all locations. You can send your print jobs to any of our libraries, and pick up your printouts in person or by using curbside pickup.

Photocopying and document scanning

Colour photocopiers are available at all locations.

  • Black and white copies: $0.15 per page
  • Colour copies: $0.50 per page

You can also use the photocopiers to scan documents and send copies to your email, free of charge.

Faxing - Central Library only

  • Send a fax: $0.50 per page

Faxes can be sent upon request. Please ask staff for assistance. You cannot receive faxes at the library.
