Library Settlement Partnership

Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre

What it is:

Library Settlement Partnership is a joint initiative between Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre and Kitchener Public Library. Settlement workers are available on-site, at the library to help new Canadians in the Kitchener-Waterloo area.

Who it's for:

Newcomers in the Kitchener-Waterloo area who are new to Canada or have been in Canada for some time. Translation services can be made available through referral.

What support looks like:

Settlement workers at the library can support you with:

  • Language training
  • Career guidance and jobs
  • Housing
  • Health care
  • Education

Online Education and Training Advisor Drop-In

What it is:

Online Education and Training Advisor Drop-In is a bilingual (English and French) service that connects individuals across Ontario to a wide range of online education and training opportunities. Whether you are looking to complete high school, pursue college or university courses, improve literacy and basic skills, or explore career development programs, Contact North/Nord can guide you through the process.

An Education and Training Advisor is available at Central the last Tuesday of the each month to offer personalized, one-on-one support. This service is free and provides assistance with everything you need to access online education and training without leaving your community.

Who it's for:

This service is available to anyone living in Ontario, especially individuals in small, rural, northern, and remote areas. Whether you're seeking to earn your high school diploma, upgrade your skills for career advancement, or explore further education opportunities, Contact North/Nord is here to help.

What support looks like:

The Online Education and Training Advisor can assist you with:

  • Exploring available online education opportunities
  • Registering for online courses, programs, and training
  • Information about financial aid for online education
  • Accessing technology needed to participate in online learning

Eviction Prevention

Social Development Centre Waterloo Region (SDC)

What it is:

The Eviction Prevention Peer Support Program is a free support service for tenants in Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo facing housing insecurity. Whether you’re at risk of eviction, dealing with unsafe or unaffordable housing, or experiencing discrimination from your landlord, trained peer support workers are here to help.

This service is rooted in community knowledge and advocacy, developed through years of tenant support via the R.E.N.T. (Renters Educating and Networking Together) program and local research on housing displacement. The peer team brings lived experience and a deep understanding of housing challenges in Waterloo Region.

Who it's for:

  • Tenants in Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge who are:
  • Facing eviction (legal or illegal)
  • Experiencing unsafe, unaffordable, or discriminatory housing situations
  • Dealing with sudden rent increases or renovictions
  • Navigating conflict with landlords
  • In need of support during Landlord Tenant Board hearings
  • Priority is given to underserved communities, including Black, Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQ+, and newcomer tenants.

What Support Looks Like:

  • One-on-one peer support, in person or virtually
  • Help preparing for and attending Landlord Tenant Board hearings
  • Mediation, negotiation, and advocacy with landlords
  • Access to private meeting space and technology for hearings
  • Warm referrals to other tenant or housing services
  • Documentation and mapping of tenant experiences to support systems change
  • Emotional and wellness-based support for tenants through difficult housing situations

When it’s offered:

Support is available every week on Wednesdays from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at Central. Walk-ins are welcome.
