The Modulation Club | Synth Meet-Up

This event has expired.
Categories: Adults Teens
April 12, 2023 @ 7:00 PM
Available at: Central Library

The Modulation Club is a monthly “synth meet” that explores the intriguing world of modular synthesis. Sessions will include demos, performances, and talks by synthesizer designers and artists.

Connect, explore, patch and create in a friendly and inclusive environment!

Michael Palumbo will be our guest for April.

In this artist talk, musician Michael  will present on three techniques that are key to his approach to playing a modular synthesizer: Euclidean sequencing, using gates as a CV source, and using stereo delay effects. Although synthesizers contain specific modules from certain manufacturers, the techniques will be explained more generally in order to be inclusive of other modules. His sound sources tend to be short sounds and impulses, like analog drums and pinged high-resonance filters. By feeding these sounds into stereo delays he is able to generate dense textures, and the gates-as-cv are used to control phrasing. Michael will then improvise a performance using the techniques from the presentation.

Bio:Michael Palumbo (MA, BFA), is a musician, teacher, and programmer. He is a PhD candidate in Digital Media, where he is studying electroacoustic music improvisation in virtual reality. He also holds a degree in electroacoustic music composition from Concordia University. He teaches computational sound and video art at York University, creative coding with JavaScript at OCAD University, and private lessons in software and music. As a freelancer, he develops custom software for musicians and maintains open-source music software such as allhandsJS, which is a program that simplifies streaming control data like MIDI and OSC over the web for online group performances. He performs regularly in Toronto as a soloist and in free-improvisation ensembles, has released music under both his own name and as Thispatcher. Michael produces a monthly free-improvisation concert series called Exit Points in Toronto.
