Vertical Files (Newspaper Clippings)

The GSR has an extensive collection of vertical files composed of newspaper clippings, collected predominantly between the  mid 1960’s and 2004. Articles, which predate the start of the clipping files, may also be included.

The files contain clippings from the following newspapers: The Record, the Waterloo Chronicle, the New Hamburg Independent, the Elmira Independent, Cambridge Times and the Ayr News.

Clipping from The Record ceased on December 31, 2004 and local community newspaper clipping ceased on December 31, 2005.

You may search the Canadian Newsstand database for Record newspaper articles dated January 1, 2005 or later, either in the library or from home or a remote location. Please note that a valid KPL card and PIN are required to access this database from outside of KPL and its branches.

Organization

The files contain local history and interest items, arranged alphabetically by subject.  The subjects are divided into two classifications: General and Business.

There are two subject (Business and General) index binders for the vertical files, which are kept on top of the vertical file cabinets in the GSR.  The subjects are listed alphabetically.  If a subject is shown in bold, an individual file exists for this subject.  "See" and "see also" references are included.

Some of the larger subject files are sub-divided alphabetically, often with a “general” section, usually at the front of the file. Other larger subject files are divided chronologically or geographically.
