Photographs
The Grace Schmidt Room holds an extensive collection of photographs of Kitchener (formerly Berlin) and Waterloo County dating back to the late nineteenth century.
These photographs belong to the Kitchener Public Library and the Waterloo Historical Society.
Digital Collection
Images that have been digitized can be viewed on the Grace Schmidt Room Digital Collection site on OurDigitalWorld (formerly Our Ontario).
The URL for our former Our Ontario site has been updated to http://vitacollections.ca/kpl-gsr. If you have the Our Ontario site bookmarked, please update the link accordingly. As this is a growing collection, please check back often to see new content or subscribe to our RSS feed to receive notifications as new content is added.
Physical Collection
Images which are not yet digitized are available for viewing in the Grace Schmidt Room. Subject and title access to the images is via a paper index, located on top of the vertical file cabinets. Each photograph has been assigned a “P” number.
On each white index card, you will find:
-
Subject heading
-
Title
(title is usually accompanied by a brief description of the image) -
Acc. No.
(“P” number assigned to the photograph) -
Coll.
(the owner of the photograph is listed here, usually “KPL” or “WHS”)
-
Neg. No.
(negative number, if applicable) -
Loc.
(actual location of the photograph) -
Small copy of the original image
(if available)
When each photograph was catalogued, a work sheet was also prepared. These are kept in binders on the shelves near the display case in the GSR, and are arranged by “P” number.
You may view a photograph by providing library staff at the Level 2 Information Desk with the “P” or “N” number and the “Location” code printed on the card.
Please note that any reproduction of photographs is governed by copyright law and restrictions may also be imposed for preservation reasons.
