Each computer has a DVD-RW drive, allowing you to read files on DVD or CD, and save your work onto DVD or CD if you choose.
All of our computers have USB 2.0 ports installed and are capable of reading most USB drives.
If you wish to save your work, you may bring in your own CD, DVD or USB drive. You may also purchase a CD or USB drive from the library. Printing is available in black and white or colour through coin-operated machines.
Computer time
In order to use Internet-enabled computers in the library, users need to log on using their KPL library card number and a Personal Identification Number (PIN). A PIN may be created or changed at the library or from home.
All library card holders have 2 hours of computer time assigned to their library card Monday through Saturday (1 hour on Sundays when the library is open) at Main. This time may be used all in sequence or in blocks throughout the day at any KPL location. KPL branch locations have Internet-enabled computers that may be booked for one hour daily.
For people who are not eligible for a free Kitchener Public Library card, guest cards will be available free of charge. These guest cards will only permit access to the Internet computers and will not be valid for borrowing library materials.
Booking a computer
There are three ways to book a computer:
-
At the library (self-serve).
Two sign-up kiosks are located at the entrance to Main’s Computer Centre, which you can use to reserve computer time.
-
Call-Ahead
Telephone booking for any location for the same day or up to two days in advance is available by calling 519-743-7502.
-
Online
Remote booking can be accessed via the eBranch, in the Book A Computer section.
Please note that for all three options, you can book a computer for up to two days in advance. This applies to both online and telephone bookings.
Volunteer Sessions
Volunteers are available by appointment to give basic instructions in the use of the Internet, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher.
Check with the staff at the Level 2 Information Desk or call 519-743-7502 for more details about the volunteer sessions and to make an appointment.
